When "EDWINS," We All Win
Education Wins. EDWINS Leadership & Restaurant Institute was founded in 2013 by Brandon Chrostowski. EDWINS offers an educational six month program of intensive training in food preparation, food service, and hospitality, to formerly incarcerated adults. Situated among the historical shopping area at Shaker Square, EDWINS has recently expanded deeper into the Buckeye-Shaker neighborhood. The mission of EDWINS is, "to teach a skilled trade in the culinary arts, empowering willing minds through passion for the hospitality industry and prepare students for a successful transition into the world of business professionals."
Over 15 years ago, after making a few bad choices, Mr. Chrostowski found himself looking up into two eyes of disgust. Those eyes belonged to a judge who ultimately gave him a pass; a second chance to change his life around. Mr. Chrostowski took full advantage of that second chance, and found a mentor in Detroit who would change the course of his life. His mentor showed him the fine skills of the culinary arts and hospitality. That road soon led to an apprenticeship in Chicago, and opportunities to refine his culinary skills in some of the best restaurants in New York City, and France.
By applying the life lessons of "perfect practice makes perfect," and "hard work doesn't have a language," Mr. Chrostowski soon propelled his vision of offering second chances into existence.
Not only does EDWINS offer over 100 second chances, it also provides housing, recreational facilities, and other resources to students in the program. EDWINS purchased three buildings on the corner of Buckeye Road and South Moreland Boulevard (just a few blocks away), for the students to reside in. Current students lodge in double room apartments, and graduates live in the adjacent alumni house.
Because Cleveland was named the most stressed city in the nation with the lowest graduation rates, it was the most fitting home for EDWINS. Other cities must wait and pray, as EDWINS will not be expanding just yet. Mr. Chrostowski believes that it would "dilute the vision." He made it clear that his ego is not involved. He will not spread himself too thin and lower the quality of the program in order to feed an ego. He's genuinely a man on a mission.
Three things get EDWINS founder, president and CEO out of bed each morning: pursuing truth, fighting for equality, and fulfilling potential.
EDWINS gives hundreds of formerly incarcerated adults the necessary skills, experience, and jobs to provide for their families and lower recidivism in their communities. With over 20,000 adults being released from prison each year, EDWINS will be the hope and the "break" that they need to succeed as returning citizens.
