10 Tips for Substitute Teachers

As a sub, I know how challenging it can be to go into a new setting, and  manage 30 or more students for several hours. It's not easy! I openly apologize to any substitute that I traumatized in my adolescence. If you're new to, or are interested in subbing, here are my 10 tips for substitute teachers.

10 Tips for Substitute Teachers
1. Greet students at the door
Let them see your face and hear your voice. It also establishes you as the authority. They know that they are walking into YOUR classroom. Although you will only be with the students for the day, let them know you care. Students can sense when you're just playing babysitter.

2. Find your help
Which students are compliant? Who is the teacher's pet? Those students will help you get through the day, especially if the teacher didn't leave in depth instructions.

3. Don't forget to take attendance
Taking attendance helps you get to know names. Using their names makes your relationship more personal. It will also help you identify the students regarding conduct and in emergency situations.

Good example: Johnny West sat with Sarah Brown during science class.
Not so good example: The boy in the blue pants sat with the girl with the red shirt during science class.

4. Remain standing
Standing and walking around the room can help to eliminate unnecessary chatter and horseplay. The closer in proximity you are to a student, the less likely he/she is to misbehave in most cases. This goes back to establishing yourself as the authority figure in your room.

5. Set the rules upfront
My top two rules are: stay seated and be respectful. I say this to the students when they first get settled in. This way they know what my expectations are. State your rules in the beginning of class and hold the students accountable throughout the day.

6. Find your comfort zone
Personally, I prefer pre K, but I also teach intermediate or middle school. Try teaching several different grade levels to find what out which environment and structure you enjoy most.

7. Get acquainted with the staff
When you check into the office, be sure to greet to any faculty and staff members you see. Familiarize yourself with the principal, assistant principal(s), and secretaries. I recommend greeting the teachers neighboring your class as well. Showing common courtesy goes a long way. Plus, it's good to know exactly who to call for backup in case things get out of control.

8. Become a returning visitor
If you like the school, come back again. Kids enjoy familiarity, and so will you. You will know the bell schedule, proper procedures, and habits of the students. The more you all get comfortable with one another, the smoother your days will become. Establish a routine and remember names. Soon, the students will know what to expect, and you will earn their respect.

9. Know the assignments of the day
Check for a lesson plan or notes. However, if neither is available have a back up plan. Will the students watch a movie? Will you print a worksheet? I suggest having something the kids can work on during the class period. Otherwise, talking and horseplay may become an issue.

10. Do your research
Have an idea of the atmosphere you'll be walking into. Visit the school's website or social media pages. Try to gain insight about the school prior to accepting a position. Is the school more like Sweet Valley High or more like East Side High?

Remember that it is your job to continue the educating process. Each day will be a new adventure. Be professional in your attire and conversation. Use these 10 tips for substitute teachers to guide you on your journey as an educator.
