How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome

In undergrad, I read an article by Kaytie Zimmerman called, "How the Youngest CEO of a Public Company Overcame Imposter Syndrome."  The article resonated with me because I too have suffered from it. At times I still battle with imposter syndrome. However, as I continue to build on my strengths and gain new skills, it becomes less of a challenge.

What is Imposter Syndrome?

Imposter syndrome reflects a belief that you are an inadequate and incompetent failure, despite evidence that indicates you are skilled and quite successful.

Julie's Experience

According to the article, Julie Smolansky ultimately led her company to $123 million in revenue at age 27. Yet, when she first accepted the CEO position at Lifeway Foods, her initial reactions were doubt, concern, and negativity. She felt like she did not belong in the position. She admitted to feeling the imposter syndrome.

Have you ever felt like your accomplishments were a result of serendipitous luck? Have you ever discounted or disregarded your expertise or natural ability? Have you ever felt like you were not right for a career, relationship or leadership role because of your age, family background, gender or lifestyle?

How To Overcome Imposter Syndrome

  1. Sharpen Your Saw - continue gaining skills and knowledge personally and professionally.
